Nuremberg, Jan. 31, 2017--The Italian long-distance bus market recorded an increase in supply again in 2016. The number of domestic and international connections grew by 30 percent. Between 2015 and 2016 there was a decrease in prices. While in 2016 the average price for a travel ticket amounted to 28 EURO in 2015, an average of 40 EURO was paid.
After the liberalization of the Italian market, supply and connections in Italy have grown, 2016 once again marked a significant increase. As competitors from neighboring foreign countries entered the domestic market, more cross-border connections were added - but not only. The new companies from abroad immediately sought to fit into the Italian market as best they could, adding more and more domestic routes to their itineraries.
The increase in connections by 2 to 3 times has also led to a significant increase in routes to southern Italy, namely to Calabria, Basilicata, and Puglia. There is also a higher number of passengers than in other years, as night runs have increased. Overall, there is a growth of more than 30 percent in offers in Italy.
Comparing the average prices of all bus companies in our search engine in the period 2015 - 2016, we find a reduction in prices. In 2015 the average price of a ticket amounted to 40 EURO, in 2016 an average of 28 EURO - in practice: a 30 % reduction. In 2016 we find a slight increase (Ø 3 EURO) in the summer months between July and September.
All in all, there is a reduction in 2016 of 2.75 % as the average price of a ticket was 29.47 EURO in the first quarter of 2016 and dropped to 28.66 EURO towards the end of the year.
Milan the Nodal City in 2016
